Maladaptive Daydreaming

Maladaptive Daydreaming is a form of dissociation in which a person is not present to interaction here and now but is present in a world of their own that can be real to them although created originally by them.

What is Maladaptive Daydreaming? It is a condition where the daydreamer disconnects (dissociates) from here and now and becomes absorbed completely in the fantasy world. The daydream is complex, vivid and distracting and may be accompanied with involuntary movements such as rocking or acting out a dream.

These daydreams may be brief as in minutes or longer as in hours or days. Participating in the daydream is effective in avoiding present stress but also in activating pleasure hormones strong enough to make it addictive and obsessive. In changing this habit one will need wisdom and support because it is addictive.

These daydreams are so immersive and take up so many hours of the day That one loses grounding in reality. People may end up neglecting relationships and responsibilities and experience a drop in one's school grades. Quality of sleep is reduced and so sleep disorders may be involved with this disorder.

Counselling and psychotherapy can help you process the stresses on one's life and heal unresolved traumas and griefs.
